My name is Austin Charlie. I am 20 years old, I graduated high school in early 2016 at Britannia Secondary School. After Graduating from an International Business program I got recommended to participate in a Youth Internship with Vancity Savings Credit Union. After the internship Vancity put me on contract until March 2017.
I like to be physically active in the community, I run marathons as a peer mentor with a program called Streetfront, I help train/teach Jujetsu, Kickboxing, Boxing, Wrestling, with U.N.Y.A an aboriginal youth agency. When I’m not working or in school,I like to spend my time with youth at UNYA. Youth from all ages look up to me, I’m one of the few positive role models that are working there way around poverty because I experienced poverty since birth. Since youth look up to me, I have to show them a better path, a better life because we all deserve better.
I’m planning on attending SFU in September, I want to participate in an aboriginal prep program that focuses on basic academics before I pursue Business and Communications at Langara College. I plan to get my education and end this cycle of poverty that are caused from generations of mistreatment.
If people in poverty are given the right support they can contribute to the economy and make this country a better place for all of us.
