Ananya Bhatia
Ananya Bhatia (she/they) is an undergraduate student at SFU studying Sociology, Public Policy & Social Data Analytics. She immigrated to Canada more than 10 years ago and has spent the last 6-7 years advocating for various social issues through involvement with multiple organizations. They're passionate about youth advocacy and grassroots, community-led initiatives.
Ananya is currently the Co-Lead of Surrey Youth Newcomer Council, where they facilitate workshops, organize events, and collaborate with community stakeholders to advocate for and address challenges faced by newcomer youth. She is also the Research & Resources Director and one of the Co-Founders of the Surrey Rainbow Project, a community-service co-op supporting and advocating for 2SLGBTQIA+ racialized individuals in Surrey. She develops accessible resources, assists with educational workshops, and conducts research to improve access to support services for racialized queer folks in Surrey. They were also part of the second cohort of City Hive's Urban ReVision: BIPOC Mentorship Studio where they learned about urban and transportation planning, public engagement, civic governance. She successfully completed a community engagement activity with Translink and created a Youth Engagement Guide to help inform their transportation plans.
Ananya is committed to ensuring diverse youth voices are heard in decision-making spaces. They aim to equip marginalized youth with skills and experiences, empower them to advocate for themselves, and gain access to opportunities that they often don't have access to. Ananya will bring her lived experiences, research, advocacy, engagement expertise, and passion for grassroots social change to CityHive’s Youth Advisory..
